Visitors to the Garden

April 6th, 2020 | 4 Comments »

In the last few days, we’ve had visitors in the garden. Some didn’t knock on the door, but they did leave their calling cards to let us know they came around.

Tidy work!
Tidy work!

I can guess who made those holes, but what creature did the work below?

Did a bird strip these trunks bare?

Birds are always welcome in the garden. Ducks, too.

I think these mallards are just getting acquainted.

Other visitors are not welcome at all.

One pair may be ok, but not more than that, please!
Oh, no, the Canada geese are back!

One pair would not be awful but a short time later, I spotted four more. And where six Canada geese gather together, more will certainly come.

The best visitors, though, were people who kept well away from my husband and me. We could hear them laughing, though — clearly they were having fun.

Can you tell what they are doing?

Can you tell what this family of five is doing?

A close-up supplies the answer.

We bought this croquet set about forty years ago when we lived in England. It has served us well.

Did you play croquet as a child? Do you play it now?

But I could see there were a lot of them. The next

Living with the Land

I like the idea of living with the land. Or rather, with the wildlife on it. Last week's post about defeating the deer made me think about how many animals I live with at Glen Villa, either occasionally or on a regular basis. I'm happy to share real estate with the ducks who nest annually at the skating pond. A few years ago, there were two separate families, and ducklings galore. I count ten ducklings but I think there were eleven. Occasionally a merganser drops in for a day or two. He
